Green rose blossoms in Ooty
GREEN roses have bloomed once again at the Rose Garden in Ooty which is a feast to the eyes of hundreds of visitors who visit the garden daily.
This rare variety of rose is planted near the gateway itself.
Just like the leaves, the petals of the rose are also green. The green roses were developed after years of research, according to the Horticulture Assistant Director Radhakrishnan. It has been evolved by budding the twigs of different varieties of rose plants brought from Bengaluru.
The garden is home to 4,100 varieties of roses with over 2 lakhs of rose plants.
Situated in the heart of Ooty town, the garden has been beautifully laid out in terraces with rose tunnels, pergolas and bowers with rose creepers.
To commemorate the centenary of the annual Flower Show, the Rose Garden was established at Vijayanagaram in Udhagamandalam covering 4 hectares in five terraces.
Today this garden has the largest collections of roses in the country like Hybrid Tea Roses, miniature rose, Floribunda, Ramblers and roses of unusual colours like black and green.
The Rose Garden is situated in slopes of the Elk Hill. The rose varieties planted in this park were assembled from different sources.
The ‘Nila Maadam’ is located in a spot from where viewers can see the entire rose garden. This garden is maintained by Tamil Nadu Horticulture Department. It has also received the award of Excellence for the best rose garden in the entire south Asia from the International Rose Society in 2006.
