When I checked out this fact with friends and on the Internet, I learnt that the Sodium Thiosulfate in the cow urine had done the trick. It converted the red bitadiene solution that that Baba had produced into a water-like liquid. I was also amazed to learn that this chemical - Sodium Thiosulfate - is present in the urine of all mammals, including humans, buffaloes and wild animals.
During my days as a newsman, a standing dictum in the newsroom was `never commit anything in writing, unless you were sure of your facts'. So I set about to do the Bitadiene and Sodium Thiosulfate experiment. Bitadiene was readily available at home, and I had conducted the test with a non-cow urine source. The bitadiene turned into a water-like substance almost instantly.
I was not surprised. I had come across several similar cases earlier, at times with even sinister motives, where divinity was attributed to mundane incidents.
I recall an incident in the early September of 1995 when rumours of Lord Ganesh drinking milk had broken out all over India. I had visited a large number of places in Chennai City along with our photographer to report it. A college professor had demonstrated it to me in the presence of his daughter, sub-editor of a newspaper at that time.
When I had raised some queries about the milk spilling out when the spoon was slightly tilted to reach the mouth of the elephant-headed deity Ganesh bypassing the trunk, they almost belligerently challenged my credentials.
I had faced similar situations while reporting `herbal petrol’ invention, sudden appearance of idols, rice pulling mystery, talking to dead people through empowered mediums, and animals talking human language. I learnt the hard way that when faith, fear or avarice came in, reason went out.
